A popular question we receive from solar home owners is ‘what is the best way to clean my solar panels?’.
In short here is the procedure:
- It is recommended to wash solar panels in early morning or late afternoon to avoid thermal shock on the glass due to sudden cooling.
- Always observe safe working practices when accessing the roof. Use a professional if there is any doubt.
- Firstly inspect the solar panels for any damage or breakage, if the panels are compromised do no proceed and contact your installer.
- Use de-ionized water if possible, but otherwise rain or tap water is ok.
- Wash the panels and use a brush or sponge to remove dirt and dust.
- Rinse again and allow to dry naturally
REC have produced a easy-to-understand guide on this topic, you can download the file here.
We generally recommend cleaning during winter/spring, when it probably hasn’t rained for a while. This is before the peak spring solar generating season.
