Solar Panel Cleaning

A popular question we receive from solar home owners is ‘what is the best way to clean my solar panels?’.

In short here is the procedure:

  • It is recommended to wash solar panels in early morning or late afternoon to avoid thermal shock on the glass due to sudden cooling.
  • Always observe safe working practices when accessing the roof.  Use a professional if there is any doubt.
  • Firstly inspect the solar panels for any damage or breakage, if the panels are compromised do no proceed and contact your installer.
  • Use de-ionized water if possible, but otherwise rain or tap water is ok.
  • Wash the panels and use a brush or sponge to remove dirt and dust.
  • Rinse again and allow to dry naturally

solar panel cleaning

REC have produced a easy-to-understand guide on this topic, you can download the file here.

We generally recommend cleaning during winter/spring, when it probably hasn’t rained for a while.  This is before the peak spring solar generating season.

Adjusting Your Hot Water Timer In Wintertime 2022

How to Adjust Your Hot Water Timer.

Now that the weather is cooling off, inevitably we all enjoy longer, hotter showers, and an increase in hot water use.

If you have an electric hot water system with a timer set to heat the water during daytime with your solar, this email will explain how to adjust it, if required.

Your Timer and Contactor.

The EH011 is the battery backed timer, and the ESC125 is a contactor (like a heavy duty switch), the contactor is fitted to prolong the life of the timer.

We set the timer to heat from 9-10am until 2-3pm which is enough for most homes.

However you may have noticed in the past few days, the water is no so hot first thing in the morning.

This is because in winter hot water usage goes up and more heating time is required.

There are two ways to achieve this:

ONE – simplest and easiest

1. Flick the small grey switch from “Auto” down to “I”
2. This will heat the water from grid at all times.
3. You will lose the benefit of the free solar heating, but you will have plenty of hot water at all times.
4. Just remember to flick the switch back up when this cold snap is over.

TWO – this requires a bit more work but will continue to maximize the free solar heating during daytime

Add an overnight boost by following these instructions:

1. Roll the grey dial upwards only, till say 2am
2. Push the small grey notches to the left so they line up with the “I” instead of the “O” – this turns on the heating
3. Allow say 1-2hr of overnight boost (remember this power will come from the grid and you pay full price for it)
4. Return the grey dial so the present time points to the right-pointing arrow, remember rolling the dial up only.

When winter / cold snap is over you can follow the same procedure to turn the boost off again by taking the 2am boost period away by pushing notches back to the “O”.

A reminder how it works.

On this screen shot of a day’s solar generation / consumption you can see the blue square load running in the morning.  This is the hot water tank drawing energy while the sun is up, and turning off by itself via the thermostat.

Please note: if you have the normal timer and contactor setup described in this message, the hot water tank will heat up daily, rain hail or shine, it is not dependent on the sun being out!

Electricity Prices Rise in July

After some years of price decreases, Ergon Energy customers are facing power price rises on July 1.

The new rate for Tariff 11 – General Supply is 24.3c/kWh. This is up2.5c/kWh, or a 12% rise.

The solar feed-in-tariff is linked to the wholesale price of power.  You may have heard this has been rising sharply due to rising fuel (coal and gas) costs.  Good news for solar customers is that it translates to an increase in the credit you receive from your exported energy.

The new rate for solar feed-in will be 9.3c/kWh. This is up 2.7c/kWh, or a 40% rise.

Overall for solar customers, if you export the same amount of energy during daytime that you use at night, you should see no change to your power bill.  This is because the cost increase at night is offset by the gain in credit during the day.  Good news!

If you don’t have solar, why not enquire and get your costs under control?

Contact-less Solar During COVID-19

Energy Base has implemented changes to our operational procedures to ensure the safety of our customers and employees.  By following these procedures we can to continue to assist our customers on their mission to reduce their energy costs.

Sales Process

We have always preferred face-to-face meetings during the sales process.  However we understand this is not possible at present. So here is our procedure for supplying you with a “contact-less” solar system:

  • Initially we will conduct a phone meeting to discuss your energy requirements and determine what solar solution is right for you.  We can carry this out either over the phone or via a video call like FaceTime, Skype or Zoom.
  • We then use our photo-quality overhead imagery and solar planning tool to design a solar layout  to suit your roof.
  • Since we always carry out a site survey to check the switchboard and roof, we would plan this to occur with no contact to anyone in your home.  As long as we can access both the switchboard and roof locations we are happy to do this ourselves at a time convenient to you.  We will not skip this very important step.
  • After completion of the site visit and planning of the roof, we will send you via email a link to our online solar proposal.  Here you can read about Energy Base and how solar helps you in general, see your roof plan and browse across some options at different price points.
  • After a few days we will call you again to ensure everything is clear and answer any further questions you may have.

Using today’s technology we are still able to provide you with great service and a comprehensive solar proposal

Install Process

Installing solar in general is a non-contact activity, we are working in unfashionable locations like your ceiling space, roof and switchboard after all!  However to heighten safety in this time here is what we will do:

  • Our team will call you when on the way to the job to advise you, so you can keep your distance.  We also ask that you have cleared our work area, namely the inverter location and access to the man hole.
  • When onsite we will wash our hands immediately and at regular intervals with soap from our work vehicle.
  • If we need to enter the house to access the man hole / ceiling space we will wipe off any surfaces we touch whilst performing the work.
  • We will refrain for entering any other part of the house whilst we are installing.
  • Upon completion we will clean our work area, and wipe down the inverter and switchboard.
  • The end-of-job STC rebate sign-off that is usually completed on the installers mobile phone will instead be carried out remotely by our office staff the next day.  You can sign off via your own mobile phone.
  • Provision of operating instructions and monitoring setup will be carried out either onsite maintaining 1.5m distance, or via phone the next day if you prefer.

Summertime Bill Blues

Question: Why is my Summertime Power Bill High?

Just as the seasons change, the results on your power bill change across the year too.  We are able to predict accurately the average annual/daily solar generation from a given system.  However it is not as easy to predict the actual dollars saved and earned from a solar system.  Plus it will vary from home to home and from season to season.

Over the past 10 years, at this time of year, we’ve had customers question their power bill because it has jumped in cost over the summer.  In 99% of cases the solar is working exactly as it should, it is just the weather that is causing the not-so-desirable result on the power bill.

Answer:

There are a few reasons for this:

  1. Increased air-conditioning during daytime = less solar exported to the grid
  2. Increased air-conditioning during night-time = more imported electricity therefore high cost from Ergon
  3. More rain = more clouds = less solar generated overall
  4. More rain = increased clothes dryer use

It is very important for all customers to remember that the “credit” earned is from only the excess solar power that has flowed to the grid, not all the solar power generated.  If your credit has decreased it just means that you are self-consuming more of the solar power within your home, before it gets to the grid.

So you are still saving money by not purchasing power during daytime, you just can’t see that figure on the power bill.

Here is a few charts to help illustrate:

High solar generation / high load:

On this day the home consumed a lot of power, peaking over 8kW and with constant load of 5kW.  The solar also peaked at 5kW, so obviously a sunny, hot day.  Almost all the solar power was self-consumed in the home and the export to the grid was virtually zero.  Therefore the home has made very good unseen savings on the power bill .

Low solar generation / high load:

Conversely on this day the home still consumed a lot of power, but the solar was very erratic and overall low in generation.

load profile

And here is a different home with large air-con load for 24h, again with low/patchy solar (considering this is with a 10kW solar system):

load chart

High solar generation / low load:

Lastly, compared to this clear day in spring, with no air-con, you can see the 5kW solar output easily covers daytime load.  Plus there is plenty of export to the grid (in green)

load profile

In all the charts above the grey shaded area is the “self-consumed solar”.

Importantly, this value is not shown on the power bill.  But it amounts to a substantial amount of energy savings over the quarter/month.

We hope this explanation helps understand the variation across seasons and how it translates to your power bill.

If you have any questions please reach out to us.

Door Knockers – No Thanks!

There is perhaps no other industry with such a relentless push from uninvited parties to purchase their products, as there is in solar.

We are continually hearing from customers that are tired of getting random calls from random companies spruiking the “latest German technology” or a “new government rebate” or to “find out if they are eligible”, or even that the “rebate is ending next week “.

In the 9+ years we’ve been operating we are yet to hear of anyone getting a good deal that was initiated with an uninvited knock on the door or telephone call at 6pm when dinner was in the oven and the kids were splashing around in the bath.

What ends up being the case is that the customer is lumped up with a system that is either:

– a cheap and nasty “bill buster” system with no-name brands

Or even worse:

– a seriously overpriced system

Take for example this review left by one of our customers recently:

Often these types of companies will induce some kind of pressure at the time of consultation by saying things like:

– the rebate is ending soon;

– we’ve only got 3 spots left this month;

– the boss will allow me to discount by $500 for 2 jobs only; or

– the special price ends this week.

In all these instances, it’s purely pressure to get you to sign up without checking other options, because they know if you did check other options from a more reputable supplier, you would not take up their offer.

If you have fallen prey to a scheme like this, you are able to exercise your right to cancel during the 10-day cooling off period for unsolicited sales under Australian Consumer Law.

You can reduce your risk of falling prey to door knocker tactics by doing the following:

  • Engage a couple of respected, experience local companies to give you a quote
  • Ask for some options to demonstrate the price range available
  • Spend some team reading / researching online to form your own opinion, but don’t believe everything you read on Facebook or online forums.
  • Check out some of the workmanship of companies who have quoted you.

By choosing Energy Base as your solar provider you can be assured of:

  • A proper site assessment including getting on the roof to measure
  • Honest advice about system sizing and expectations of results
  • Fair pricing
  • Neatly crafted installs
  • Solid aftersales service

Call us now on 49512214 to discuss more about your solar requirements.

Solar Designs – Get it Done Right

During the past week we have come across three cases where customers have been left with poorly designed solar systems by a previous installation company.  In all cases the poor design was not noticed until some years later when we attended site to check a fault or perform a service.

Issues we have identified are:

  1. A solar array upgrade added – with additional panels placed right under a huge mango tree.
  2. A solar array extended – with totally mismatched panels added to the same string/group as the original older panels.
  3. A larger solar array installed with all panels facing east – when a split east-west array or even all west would have been better.

In all cases the result is that whilst the system does still function, it functions at a far reduced level than where it should, and the customer has paid for something that they haven’t received.

In at least two of these cases, the work was done by a local company, so unfortunately we can’t say it was done by fly-by-nighters.

Energy Base invests into training all of our electricians to become Clean Energy Council Accredited Design and Installers.

We presently have the following electricians accredited:

Shannon Hagger A8662476

Brendan Camilleri A8394651

Eben Potgieter A5018496

And this week our newest electrician Nick Goddard is undergoing his training to gain his accreditation.

Therefore we will soon have four electricians on our books with the right knowledge and experience to carry out a proper design and give you the right advice about your solar power system!

Eungella Off-Grid

Last month we installed an off-grid system at a beautiful setting, high in the hills behind Eungella.

As you know the climate at Eungella is somewhat different compared to the rest of the region, after all the name Eungella means ‘land of the clouds’.  We’ve been keeping an eye on the weather up there since this job was confirmed and often when its clear in Mackay it’s cloudy at Eungella.

When working on another off-grid job earlier this year during summer it was noted that the temperature differential between the top of the range and the bottom was about 8 degrees.  This will be great during summer when air-con use would be less, solar performance will be better and the battery bank will be happier because they are cooler.

However the big difference will be that the maximum demand will likely occur in winter due to space heating requirements.  We’ve already learnt that oil heaters us a LOT of power.

The new home is for a young growing family, so we know their power needs will increase over time.

All of this has been considered in the design of the system:

  • use of highest efficiency LG Neon2 330W solar modules
  • over-sized solar array to capture all the possible solar energy in cloudy weather, and for when the clouds (eventually) clear
  • space left on the shed roof and on left side of the equipment board for future DC charging via an MPPT charge controller.
  • battery bank / busbars arranged to allow easy expansion to 5 cabinets / 20 batteries = 50kWh
  • auto-start generator hard-wired into the system as per Australian Standards
  • due to the remoteness of the site, an additional ‘doomsday’ switch for a spare generator has been included in the extremely unlikely case of battery, inverter and main generator failure – we always think one step ahead at Energy Base!

The Victron Color Control GX allows both the customer and our service team to keep a close eye on all parameters of the system, as well as easy tweaking of settings as the system beds in.

Commercial Success Story – Three Years Later

Custom Fluid Power Mackay Achieves a Great Result from Their Solar Investment

As an example of an optimal outcome for a commercial solar power system, on many levels, look no further than the result for Custom Fluid Power’s Mackay branch.

In 2016, Energy Base was asked to investigate the energy needs at the Mackay facility and submit a proposal for a solar power system.

After a walk-through of the workshop and office, it was agreed to take the first step in the design process, which was to obtain a meter data download, to obtain the 8760 data (24hr x 365 days).

Once this data was received, it was uploaded to our solar proposal calculator, allowing us to model a full years consumption against a full years solar generation.

We determined that a 38kW solar array, connected to a 30kW inverter system would give a great reduction in power bills.

Keeping to a 30kW inverter system allowed us to avoid additional costs of around $10,000 associated with >30kW systems, hence minimizing upfront investment whilst not sacrificing performance.

It would also bring further planned benefits in the future (more on that later)…

The calculator determined that energy from the solar system would result in imported energy from the grid being reduced by 37%

And a 33% Return on Investment in Year 1:

The installation was confirmed and the system was installed at the end of 2016.

  • 38kW LG 285W solar modules (made in Korea)
  • 25kW and 5kW SMA inverters (made in Germany)

12 months on, an evaulation of the performance and a comparison to the Proposal was made.

The accuracy of the result surprised even us!

The solar system produced 46.8MWh which offset 36% of the 126MWh total consumption.

Compared to the estimate of 37%, we were very happy with 1% error!

A bigger benefit after 12 months was the ability of the customer to have themselves re-rated as a ‘Small Business’ customer with Ergon, because their annual consumption was reduced to below 100MWh.

Therefore their energy rate was reduced from over 40c/kWh to around 28c/kWh, hence saving a further 1/3 of their remaining energy costs from the grid.

Further (!), because the inverter system was rated at 30kW and not larger, they are now able to apply to export excess solar energy to the grid to earn some credit on weekends.

Overall, you could call this a win-win-win-win scenario

  • win (solar reduces energy costs – as always)
  • win (perfect size solar installed thanks to correct 8760 data –  no over-investment)
  • win (reduction in Ergon tariff from Large to Small)
  • win (solar export earning on weekends)

Adjusting your Hot Water Timer

At Energy Base, we use the Hager EH011 timer for controlling daytime heating of your hot water from your solar system.

The EH011 is ultra-reliable and features a battery backup to ensure that it keeps time, even if there is a 200hr mains power outage

Sometimes we receive calls from customers wishing to adjust their heating period, or override and heat water from the grid immediately.

Below is an instruction from Hager showing you how to setup and operate the timer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikC60uPy_I8

Keep in mind that the timer dial is to be rolled UP only, and don’t forget to return the grey toggle switch to AUTO when you are finished setting up, or finished using the override.

As a guide, we set the timer to heat from 9-10am until 2-3pm for most homes.

Sometimes, in winter, customers wish to set an overnight boost for 1-2hrs to ensure really hot water for morning showers.  This overnight boost is then removed in spring time following the instructions in the video above.

Fronius Wi-Fi

Attention all Fronius inverter customers!

In most cases your Fronius inverter is connected to the inverter via your home wi-fi network.

During installation we pair the inverter to your wi-fi router by entering your home wi-fi network name and password.

If you get a new router due to an NBN install, or other reason, the inverter needs to be re-paired to the new router.

You will probably receive an error message from Fronius in your inbox in the meantime.

To re-pair the inverter to the router, you can follow this easy video from Fronius:

We recommend using two devices (smart phone, laptop, iPad etc) to carry out this task; one to watch the above video on, the other to actually do the task at the same time.

If you are having problems please call us on 49512214 for assistance

LG Upgrades Product Warranty

LG Solar has recently announced an increase in the Product Defect warranty on the Neon2 range up to 25 years, from 15 years previously.

This is now 15 years longer than the industry standard of 10 years.

The 25 year Performance Warranty stays at 98% in 1st  year, with Annual Degradation 0.5%, meaning that after 25 years the guaranteed solar generation is at 86% of new, compared to 80.7% industry standard.

In Australia LG has so far distributed close to 750,000 panels and the warranty returns have been very very small.

The Performance Warranty s , The new warranty improvements apply to : the modules produced from 01.Oct.2017 (Serial No. : 710Kxxxxxxxx~)

LG believes this announcement will serve to reduce the misuse of of the 25 year Performance Warranty  to mislead customers into believing they have a proper, valuable 25 Product Warranty. In LG’s case now the choice is clear – there is one strong warranty – 25 Years Product and Performance warranty.

Given LGs size and strength compared to many competitors, this latest improvement gives solar customers Australia-wide a clear choice between LG and the rest.

Please also note LG Solar again won the Top Brand Award for 2018, after winning it also in 2016 and 2017, for being the panel trusted by most installers as offering a quality outcome for the end customer.

2016 Power Price Rise – Save with Solar

July 1 has brought with it new power prices, and as usual the price is up.  Both residential and business customers will face an electricity price rise of up to 15.8% for some small business tariffs.

Small reductions in service fees have been offset by higher energy charges.  The good news is that a solar power system can help reduce energy charges by reducing consumption from the grid.

Our solar customers have reported that savings from solar have been 50% of their power bill, or better in some cases.

Energy Base is a trusted, local solar power provider for over 6 years, and can advise customers the best way to save with solar.

Using the best products on the market from LG Electronics and SMA, you solar investment will give you benefit for many years ahead.
